Greens to cut limos to improve refuse collection

Glasgow City Council is to be asked to slash the number of civic limousines as part of the Greens' proposals for budget decision day on 28th January.

The city leases the massive cars to transport the Lord Provost and Bailies to civic events and other councillors to meetings. However, their use is lessening and the city doesn't need so many. This cut can also be seen as reducing luxuries during these hard times.

Cllr Danny Alderslowe said, "Limos for Councillors are a sheer indulgence, the cuts in limos will save £175k in the first year and double that in following years. Whilst still keeping a car for the most significant civic occasions, taxis will be used for other events."

Cllr Alderslowe added, "The Greens will use the savings to provide an improved new rubbish collection system. A pilot project covering 4000 homes in high density tenement areas will collect rubbish from large on-street bins. The bins would be emptied more quickly and easily by Cleansing staff. The project aims to work with residents to solve the problem of constantly filthy closes and bin shelters in areas such as Govanhill."

Greens will also be suggesting other cuts and redirection of funds at the budget meeting.
