Call for UNITE to clear up graffiti problem at their Gibson Street building

The graffiti problem at the new student accommodation on Gibson Street needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency by UNITE, the multi million pound company responsible for its design and management.

After four months, no proposals have been provided showing details of how the lower portion of the building’s wall facing the River Kelvin and remaining riverbank are to be finished. Local residents say this is an unacceptable response and they can no longer tolerate lack of action by UNITE.

Westbank Quadrant resident, Eric Kay has, for some years, worked alongside other local residents in this corner of Glasgow, undertaking voluntary efforts to clean up and improve the area. With reference to the graffiti problem associated with the UNITE Building, Mr Kay said, “Another local resident and I alerted UNITE to this graffiti on 20 March and asked that urgent action be taken to ensure it was dealt with promptly. Since then there have been a catalogue of justifications for taking no action to clean it off. This developer has student residences throughout the country but it seems unable to deal with a recurrent commonplace problem. This is a Conservation Area in a historic part of Glasgow yet this development is creating an eyesore.”

Councillor Martha Wardrop has made enquiries to Planning Officers at Glasgow City Council seeking reassurance that the graffiti problem would be resolved speedily. Cllr Wardrop commented, “I asked for plans to clean up the graffiti to be submitted by the Unite at the end of June but this has not materialised. This situation cannot go on indefinitely. It is running the area down and graffiti is spreading across streets in the vicinity. The Clean Glasgow campaign has been supporting efforts to improve the riverbank environment and this appears to be thwarted by the delays in clearing the graffiti at the Unite Building.”
